Overview

Created in a week for the level design sprint hosted by Oliver William Walker. During the sprint, participants were tasked with creating a Valve level. I designed a level in which players begin in an abandoned building and can explore it while also teleporting back in time to the same building. The design was inspired by Portal and Prince of Persia: Warrior Within, as well as my experience working in a historic 13th-century building in Farnham, UK.

Inspiration and design Goals

  • Inspired by Portal, environmental puzzles that require players to think about navigation and progression.

  • Players can use the teleport mechanic as a problem-solving tool rather than a movement ability.

  • Centred on designing moments where players can realise how switching timelines can open new areas.

  • Warrior Within introduces time-shift sequences that guide players smoothly between different versions of the same environment, encouraging a positive gaming experience.

  • The objective was to enable players to experience a familiar space in two different states.

  • Used changes in the environment across different timelines to open up new gameplay options and paths.

Building inspirations

  • The layout of the level was inspired by a historic 13th-century building in Farnham.

  • The building's corridors, stone architecture, and ambiance shaped the overall layout of the level.

  • I aimed for the environment to appear believable while centring gameplay and exploration.

Level Guiding

  • The present level represents that there is no clear path up the stairs.

  • Encouraged players to walk around the broken-down building and navigate to the teleporter.

  • The present level offers opportunities for players to use to their advantage to reach the first floor.
